Organ donation rethink

The current “opt in” system has seen an increase in donation over the last 3 years but still falls short of the target of 50% that the NHS Blood and Transplant service have set to be reached by 2013.

 

The opt in approach also allows for bereaved relatives to say no, even if the wishes of the patient was to donate their organs.

 

An “opt out” system would presume that people have agreed to donate organs, which should increase donation and help to reach the targets set.
